"You don't exist!"

Rob Fisher has an interesting posting up about police harassment, as displayed in a reality TV show. Basically, the police took it upon themselves to mess with some apparently quite innocent citizens, fishing for crimes that they might have committed. And it turned out one of them had apparently done something evil. He had, apparently, committed the crime of failing to be on the police driver database. Said the policeman: "You don't exist." (It turned…

Thinking about the total surveillance future

On Saturday January 6th of what is still next year - Happy New Year when it comes everyone! - I will be giving the first of Christian Michel's talks in his 6/20 Series of the year 2007. My talk will be entitled "Getting to grips with the Total Surveillance State and the Total Surveillance Society". And for reasons which will become all too clear if you read the rest of this posting, I would appreciate…

Michael Totten rides again…

Michael Totten has written a couple very interesting articles called Hezbollah's Putsch and Hezbollah's Christian Allies. Well worth checking out as you just do not see stuff like this in the mainstream media all too often. Also consider dropping your mouse on his PayPal donations button to support his excellent international reportage….

Insight

Given that the papers are full of the most appalling socialist commentators sharpening their knives to butcher Britain's remaining economic freedoms, when 'right-wing' (in their terms, God help us) Tony Blair leaves office, it is nice to be able to point out a ray of sunshine. I like Nick Cohen. He is often wrong, but he does have the sense to follow his own mind rather than retailing the received wisdom . And he is…

The End Of The Smoke-Filled Room

When the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, the District of Columbia will join many other jurisdictions around the country in banning smoking in virtually all public places:
Smoking in District bars is about to be snuffed out, but not without a last, hazy hurrah.
The Jefferson Hotel plans to pass out cigars and cigarettes and have […]

Blog Review 93

HedgeFundGuy points out that it’s not what got us last time that will get us next: we’re at least alert to that older problem, as any plane hijakers these days quickly find out.

Wat Tyler has a look at the Honours List and wonders about these rewards for failure. Netsmith would just like to point out that the odd gong is a lot cheaper than actually paying their pensions.

The Taxpayer’s Alliance has released its annual list of non-jobs as advertised in The Guardian Society pages.

Mark Perry asks a very important question. If Cuba’s health system is a triumph of the socialist revolution, why isn’t Castro himself using it?

Andrew Morriss wonders why Bob Geldof and Bono are meeting in Germany to discuss African development:

What is to debate? Only entertainers and politicians could be unaware of the straightforward starting points for solving Africa’s many problems: free trade and governments that neither murder their citizens nor steal their property.

For those so deluded as to think that governments look beyond the next election while private companies are only interested in the next quarter’s results, well, The Coyote Blog would like to have a word.

And finally, Chris Dillow would like to congratulate Sir James Dyson on his gong, but could he please get his company to be a little less sexist?

The GOP In Microcosm

The Washington Post writes today about the troubles of the Republican Party in Kansas, which seem to be only a smaller version of the GOP’s problems nationwide:
Republicans lost their U.S. House and Senate majorities and 350 seats in state legislatures across the country. The early post-election Kansas experiences show that a recovery could be difficult […]

Is Taxation Really Theft ?

One of the more well-known slogans of hard-core libertarians is “Taxation is Theft.” It’s an easy slogan for those who believe in it, and it’s message is pretty clear — to a true believer, there is no moral distinction to be made between an IRS tax collector and a mugger who demands your wallet at […]

The Nanny State: Manhattan Edition

The New York Post chronicles the list of things that the City of New York has tried to ban this year, sometimes successfully:

Trans-fats.
Aluminum baseball bats.
The purchase of tobacco by 18- to 20-year-olds.
Foie gras.
Pedicabs in parks.
New fast-food restaurants (but only in poor neighborhoods).
Lobbyists from the floor of council chambers.
Lobbying city agencies after working at the same […]

Joke of the day 619

During basic army training, a sergeant was telling his group how a submachine gun sprayed bullets. He drew a circle on a blackboard and announced that it had 260 degrees.
“But, sergeant, circles have 360 degrees,” called out one of the trainees.
“Don’t be stupid,” the sergeant roared. “This is a small circle.”
