Liberty Rock Friday: …And Justice for All by Metallica

This song somehow seems appropriate in marking the end of another term of the U.S. Supreme Court.

ObamaCare: 21st century gerrymandering?

It’s a rare day that I don’t read some story about President Obama punishing some financial institution,  auto manufacturer or responsible party for not playing along with his political agenda.  It’s fairly common knowledge that the elderly are more likely to vote Republican than Democrat. While the main stream media seems ignorant of the fact, […]

Booze and burqas on the public streets - defend both

In France a group of MPs has said that France ought to investigate the possibility of banning the burqa. In Britain, 'More than 700 "controlled drinking zones" have been set up across England, giving police sweeping powers to confiscate beer and wine from anyone enjoying a quiet outdoor tipple.' If you want to keep your freedom to drink what you please on the public street then fight for the freedom to wear what you please…

Michael Jackson leaves the building

A nice piece by Jesse Walker at Reason about the late Michael Jackson. I think Off the Wall was one of the first pop albums I remember listening to, and of course Thriller, with that unbelievable video, was the one that helped propel MTV as a vehicle for music. Those two records remind us not only of what a great performer Jackson was in his heyday, but also of the musical genius of Quincy Jones….

SCOTUS Returns to Sanity in School Strip Search Case

It seems that most of the time the U.S. Supreme Court is divided 5-4 on what should be very basic Constitutional principles (such was the case I wrote about in my most recent post). But once in awhile, SCOTUS does the unthinkable and actually upholds the Constitution. In Safford Unified School District #1 et. al. […]

Waverider rides again

I ran across this item in a Jane's publication: Boeing prepares X-51A for hypersonic test flight. The US Air Force ( USAF) plans to fly the Boeing Phantom Works X-51A Waverider hypersonic engine research vehicle at up to Mach 6 later this year. Joseph Vogel, Boeing X-51A programme manager, Advanced Network and Space Systems, and Charles Brink, X-51A programme manager, USAF Research Laboratory, spoke to reporters at Boeing's Huntington Beach facility in southern California on…

There is no such thing as a good tax

This might have made the grade as a Samizdata quote of the day, but we already have a superb one today. However, I wanted to post this by the regular commentator, IanB, as it was too good to leave at the bottom of a very long thread about the flawed idea that land, qua land, is special, and must be singled out for tax because of its supposed uniqueness, as distinct from say, income or…

A book review and thoughts on bankruptcy

I don't intend to buy the book, but Sean Gabb's review of Kevin Carson's recent work is well worth reading. Carson is a sort of radical anarchist-libertarian who has interesting things to say. He's worth paying attention to; and Sean gives what looks like a very fair appraisal. And reading Sean's review got me thinking about one supposedly arcane issue: bankruptcy law. I thought about this because Mr Gabb, whom I would consider to be…
